Journalistic Options for Responding to Ethical Issues in the 2015 Election Campaigns in Nigeria

Mr Lanre Idowu , Chief Executive Officer, Diamond Publications Ltd and Diamond Awards for Media Excellence (DAME) on February 5 at the Lagos Television Complex, Ikeja, addressed ethical issues in the 2015 Nigeria elections in the 6th edition of the ACSPN Empowerment Series (AES).

The most interactive presentation, among others, covered the significance of elections, issues in the 2015 elections, guidelines for coverage, underlying principles guiding the code for electoral coverage, code of ethics for Nigeria journalists, and challenges in redressing ethical infractions in the media.

He stressed the need for ethical reporting and mentioned two platforms that deal with ethical journalism issues in Nigeria. They are: Nigerian Press Council (NPC) – a statutory agency whose legitimacy is a matter of litigation, and Independent Ombudsman – a self-regulatory mechanism of the Newspapers Proprietors Association of Nigeria (NPAN), which is supported by the Nigerian Guild of Editors and Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ).
