The Association of Communication Scholars & Professionals of Nigeria (ACSPN) History Series (AES) is another major initiative to fill a critical gap in the rapidly evolving development of traditional and new media in Nigeria.
It targets the restoration of a rapidly eroding institutional memory which the Nigerian educational system is complicit in complicating by delisting history as a core subject for pupils and students across levels of education with the consequence that the foundation of the awareness and patriotism required for national development in the 21st century is seriously compromised.
ACSPN is collaborating with the Diamond Awards for Media Excellence (DAME) in this initiative. DAME is Africa’s longest running media awards and co-publisher of the Media Review, Nigeria’s journal of the media, to identify, celebrate persons and document their significant contributions to the development of communication and media in Nigeria
Like the ACSPN Empowerment Series (AES) – a flagship programme, the maximum targeted time for each activity is five hours on a day. Each edition is designed to focus on a personality who has played a major role the evolution of media and communication in Nigeria. Resource persons once identified are expected to just tell their stories and experiences in practice.
This is to be recorded for posterity and follow-up action would be to explore publishing the narratives which at some point would be disseminated to benefit communication and journalism training and practice at various levels. The plan is to hold the activity in schools and other centres to restore and promote a knowledge of and sense of history and perspective.
Six bi-monthly editions are the preliminary target nationally. The expectation is a progressive decentralization of the series to hold in the country’s six geopolitical zones in furtherance of ACSPN’s vision and mission to support the development of communication scholarship and practice in Nigeria. It is a not-for-profit activity.
The association remains open to collaboration from, among others, individuals, organizations, institutions, governments, local and international agencies to further promote and strengthen the empowerment and history series.
ACSPN is keen on reversing the haphazardness in approaches to addressing the realities of communication and journalism practice. The expectation is that the type of virility and cohesiveness the field of communication and media is known for globally would begin to reflect in planning, strategies and activities to systematically position communication and media as serious and mainstream business in Nigeria and chart a distinct and productive course in a way which tackles its myriad realities.
