Call for Papers
Media narratives across the globe have become a point of interest because of the emerging and disturbing trend of fake news and hate speech. Although fake news and hate speech are global issues, they have become more conspicuously catastrophic in Africa because of their destructive and divisive effects on the socio-cultural and political stability of the continent.
Although fake news and hate have long historical roots in the political clime and made visible through propaganda, jingoistic newspapers, and business-controlled public relations, they have become more obvious and now dot the daily narratives of the society, This is attributable to the rise of extremist voices in political discourse and specifically, an agenda to deconstruct the power of government, institutional media and other establishments, thriving because of the hydra-like nature of the digital grapevine, especially when it comes to spreading unverified news. Across Africa in recent years, the dissemination of unfiltered provocative messages on available media platforms, have become more widespread and a threat to the continent.
This broad conception of fake news and hate speech not only act to repress evidence-based inquiry on societal issues and peaceful coexistence, but they diminish the power of populations to seek informed consensus on policies and understand/ tolerate the socio-cultural and political uniqueness of cohabitants in a
polity.
ACSPN invites papers from its members/potential members, other interested individuals, local and international organizations, associations, institutions, agencies, the private sector and governments for participation in its 2018 annual conference to examine Media Narratives: Hate Speech, Fake news and Political Stability in Africa
Participants are encouraged to explore theoretical, conceptual and contextual issues in the areas of Media Narratives: Hate Speech, Fake News and Political Stability in Africa as they relate to any of the sub-themes or related areas under the theme. We welcome academic contributions, case studies or special presentations that are
products of collaborative, original and innovative empirical studies or professional experiences in these areas.
